A note on fasting and abstinence
Lent is a time of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving in order to deepen in our ability to know and receive God’s great love for us and for all.
The U.S. Bishops offer the following guidelines for fasting and abstinence: “Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence. For members of the Latin Catholic Church, the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Latin Catholic Church from age 14 onwards.” (Click here to view the USCCB website)
We invite you to reflect on this call to fast in light of the ongoing unchosen asceticism of pandemic. For nearly a year, many of us have given up much for the sake of our own well-being as well as concern for the common good in order to minimize the spread of the Covid-19 virus. These sacrifices can increase a sense of isolation and negatively impact our spiritual, mental, and social health. Given this, please reflect prayerfully on how God is calling you to fast and abstain in a way that doesn’t add to any sense of separation or pain you may be feeling during an already challenging time, but rather serves to open your heart more generously to the loving and merciful presence of God within you, in your brothers and sisters, in the Scriptures, in all creation.
St. Tim's will offer a virtual Stations of the Cross for you to pray with as we move through the Lenten season. The 40-minute Stations of the Cross video was streamed on Friday, February 19. To view the video on the Church of St. Timothy YouTube channel, please click here.
