Father George Kolath Memorial Scholarship
The purpose of the Father George Kolath Memorial scholarship is to recognize the efforts of a high school graduating senior; to celebrate his/her involvement in church, community, school, and home; and to financially assist that student in his/her future education.
The St. Timothy Parish Pastoral Council approved the Youth Advisory Committee’s scholarship proposal in 2003. The first class of graduating seniors to receive the scholarship was the class of 2003. 2021 will be the 19th year of awarding scholarships. Over those years, 79 young people have received a scholarship, in varying amounts, with a total of $65,400 in funds towards furthering their educational goals. Ten scholarships were granted in 2020, the most awarded in the history of the scholarship program.
Father George Kolath was an associate pastor at St. Timothy’s from 2000 until his passing away from cancer in 2003. He was a member of the Youth Advisory Committee and was very active with the youth of the parish. He had a positive impact on the students, helping them to understand that Jesus is calling them to act with mercy and love every day of their lives. Father George connected the youth with their peers in the neighboring parishes and encouraged them to receive the sacraments regularly. He would often drop in on youth events and gatherings to share a tidbit or just to listen. His kindly smile, joyful eyes, and infamous jokes would always bring cheer and love to those with him. Even in his last meeting with the youth, he encouraged them to pray, trust in God’s love, that God had a plan and God’s will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
St. Timothy’s Youth Advisory Committee offers this scholarship in honor of Father George’s extensive work with youth, renaming it in 2005 to “Father George Kolath Memorial Scholarship.”
