TMISSION APPEAL FOR JAFFNA DIOCESE, SRI LANKA
|
|
Next weekend, Fr. David Manuelpillai from New York will be making an appeal at all the Masses for his diocese of Jaffna. Sri Lanka is a tiny island situated off the southern coast of India in the Indian Ocean. It was formerly known as Ceylon and is rich in resources of tea, rubber, coconuts, and diamonds. In 1983 war broke out in the country, challenging the cultural and religious diversity that existed peacefully for so long. Now there are over two hundred thousand people living in refugee camps. The war has caused havoc in the diocese, with many churches and rectories destroyed and peoples’ lives devastated. The current crisis makes it difficult to pay for education in seminaries. Many who are ordained serve in other parts of the world, even in the United States. Fr. David is coming here as part of the Mission Cooperation Plan of the Archdiocese, which schedules one missionary concern a year to be hosted by every parish. We welcome Fr. David as we recognize our responsibility to the worldwide Church needs. Please use the envelope found in your packet entitled St. Timothy's Mission.
